TECHNICAL ARTICLE

A covered grating deck combines a load-bearing grating with a cover plate. It can limit liquids and small objects passing through, for example above equipment or a working area. The performance of the complete installation also depends on joints, edges and penetrations.

Construction and relevant products

Moulded GRP grating supports the covered surface. Finish, panel depth and material selection must suit the loading, cleaning requirements and environment. Articles 15039 and 15040 are relevant covered products. Refer to their product pages for current dimensions and specifications.

Where are covered decks used?

Applications include platforms and mezzanines in water treatment, aquaculture and process facilities. The aim may be to manage wash water or protect installations below. A covered panel is not automatically a documented chemical containment system; the required function needs a specific assessment.

Joints and edge details

Plan panel layout and supports before fabrication. Where liquid is to be retained, joints, upstands and connections must form a continuous system. Sealants or adhesives must suit the substrates, movement, liquids and temperature, rather than being selected by a generic product name.

Panels and edge profiles can be fabricated for curved layouts. Processing and sealing of cut edges must follow the material and supplier instructions.

Drainage and penetrations

Falls, outlets and any drainage fittings must direct liquid to the intended destination. Pipe and cable penetrations need details that account for sealing, movement and maintenance. Openings and outlets must also be checked against the grating's structural capacity.

Installation and maintenance

  • Check loads, support points and fixings.
  • Select the surface and cleaning method for actual use.
  • Plan dust control and suitable processing methods.
  • Inspect joints, seals, cut edges and outlets after installation.
  • Include leak checks, cleaning and inspection in the maintenance plan.

Joints and seals can require attention even when the GRP panel itself is well suited to the environment.
