Ostasteidn picnic area – special solutions in fiberglass
Ostasteidn rest area by Sandsfjorden features walkways, benches and several custom fiberglass solutions. The project shows how the material can be integrated into architecture and landscape.
In beautiful surroundings along the Sandsfjorden you will find Ostasteidn Rasteplass – an unusual sight. The rest area was built with several special solutions supplied by Glassfiber Produkter.
«"The excitement lies in seeing how fiberglass can solve challenges," says project manager Magnar Stangeland. "Here we have used fiberglass for many different things. Some you can sit on, some you can walk on and some are for decoration.".
Glassfiber Produkter has delivered:
- Door leaf for service buildings
- Toilet symbols and symbol for the garbage chute
- Gratings for walkways
- Edge plates for walkways
- Benches along the parking lot
- Benches for seating area
- Four tables at seating area
- Edge plates along the seating area
- Floor plate with grating and garbage chute
Much more than old boats
Fiberglass is associated with old boats, but the material can be used for so much more. Several of the products delivered to Ostasteidn are manufactured from recycled, ground fiberglass granules with the addition of new polyester, supplied by Ecofiber Recycling AS. Old, scrapped fiberglass recreational boats are given new life by being recycled into new material.
Edge boards, table bases and garbage chute are manufactured with the granulate, and gratings, benches, table tops and door leaves are manufactured in natural-colored, translucent fiberglass-reinforced polyester.
Ryfylke's nature
The rest area consists of a service building with toilets, seating and tables. The design of the building is based on the paintings of artist Lars Hertevig, who was inspired by the nature of Ryfylke. The layout and dreamlike design of the rest area blend in with nature, and the toilet building is vegetated with moss, which will eventually become a moss facade. A fiberglass walkway is used to interfere with the vegetation as little as possible around, and connects the different parts of the picnic area.
The project is part of national tourist routes where the Norwegian Public Roads Administration is responsible for viewpoints and rest areas around Norway. They work to design beautiful sights of high visual quality. KAP arkitektur og plan AS is behind the design of Ostasteidn and received Concrete Element Award in 2019 for the work on the picnic area.
